Got a betta, he has a white spot on a scale, it got smaller, should i still treat it anyway? is it fungus?

He has a clean, 2.5 gallon tank with a filter, a heater and a light. I'm not sure what would have caused him to get sick, but the pet store gave me some methylene blue to treat him with. will it go away on its own, or should i just treat him? he eats voraciously and swims around almost as much as he ever did...i dont know if this is more serious that i think.Got a betta, he has a white spot on a scale, it got smaller, should i still treat it anyway? is it fungus?
if he's acting normal, don't treat. medication is very hard on fish (and the tank). wait a day or two, if nothing else happens it's no big deal. if he starts becoming lethargic or stops eating or more appear, then treat.

(btw... if it's the size of a grain of salt and more start appearing it's ich and you'll need something with malachite green). Got a betta, he has a white spot on a scale, it got smaller, should i still treat it anyway? is it fungus?
Prettysnazy gives you some decent advice, except that it is not true that your tank is too large for your betta. It is good for a betta to be in a filtered, heated tank just like any other fish and so your tank is fine, it is even good if you wanted to go larger than what you have. There is a large misconception (put out mostly by petstores, I believe) that bettas don't like space -- they most certaintly do.

It is, however, true what s/he says about them liking to get to the surface...betta tanks are best when they are more long per gallon than they are deep, but by no means should you downgrade your tank.

Just wanted to say that. Good luck to you and your fish! I've never had this particular problem before, so I don't have any actual experience to tell, just to keep the water clean and to raise the temperature (gradually!). Ich is a parasite so if you are treating your fish, you must use something that kills parasites, not an antibiotic. Adding a bit of aquarium salt may be something you sould also look into.
Your fish most likely has ick. I am very familiar with this, my tank gets it when ever I put more fish in it. Even if it looks like it's getting smaller, treat it anyway. It could possibly get worse. But, if it is getting smaller, then only give it half a dose, it should go away. treat it until it does.

Also, I don't think your betta needs that big of a tank, Their natural habbitat is less that half a gallon of water. They live in cow print size puddles of water, so a smaller fish tank would be good, that might be what's stressing him out.

Bettas like to sit on the bottom.

They also breathe air, so if he has to swim far to get to the top of the tank, it might stress him out.
