Why is it improtant to learn about protist and fungi?

Protists play a fundamental role in aquatic ecosystems. Protista include the photosynthetic algae that make the majority of the worlds oxygen. The phytoplankton make up the primary energy level for food chains in the seas. They are the plankton that feeds most of the life in the seas. Heterotrophic protists feed on other protists and prokaryotes (bacteria) and are eaten by both fish and sea mammals. Many species of algae are edible and used in cooking or making agar plates to use in research.

Fungi are symbiotic with most of the worlds plant life making it possible for perennial plants to acquire water and soluble nutrients by extending the range of their roots.

Fungi are the last step in food webs. they recycle ditritus into component molecules enriching the soil. The mycelium of some forest fungi can extend enormous distances. A single Armillaria bulbosa can permeate hundreds of acres of forest soil.http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ww0504.htmWhy is it improtant to learn about protist and fungi?
