Why do scientists now classify slime molds among the protists and not among the fungi?

It's a matter of slime moulds not being fungi. They've got no close relationship to proper moulds. Classifcation categories should, according to current opinion, be built on genuine cases of descent. Lumping unrelated organisms into the same category is a misrepresentation of evolutionary reality.
